Opening corporate bank accounts for Portuguese and foreign companies: documents, requirements and timeframes.

Opening a Bank Account for a Portuguese Company

Banks accept documents in Portuguese, English and Spanish. For any other language, you will need a notarised translation into English plus legalisation.

Documents required

  • Articles of Association
  • Extract from the Companies Register
  • Extract from the Register of Beneficial Owners
  • Scanned passport page of the shareholder or director
  • Proof of the shareholder's permanent address (utility bill)

Timeframe: 5 working days, not counting the time to send the original signed bank forms.

Opening a Bank Account for a Foreign Company

A foreign-company account is opened on copies of corporate documents provided to the bank with an apostille or consular legalisation, none older than one year:

  • Certificate of Incorporation
  • Memorandum of Association
  • Articles of Association
  • Minutes of the subscribers' meeting, appointment of director or secretary, and current appointments report
  • Shareholders' resolution
  • Certificate of Good Standing or Certificate of Incumbency (not older than 1 year)
  • Summary of company information held at Companies House (not older than 1 year)
  • Documents and information on the company's shareholders and directors

Timeframe: from 10 working days, not counting the time to send the original signed bank forms.
